Deus fez a pedra rude, a pedra forte,
e depois destinou: -Serás eterna.
Mostrarás a altivez de quem governa,
não ousará tocar-te a própria morte.

E a pedra julgou linda a sua sorte.
Foi palácio, foi templo, foi caverna,
foi estátua, foi muralha, foi cisterna,
viveu sem coração, sem fé, sem norte.

Mas viu morrer o infante, o monge, a fera,
o herói, o artista, a flor, a fonte, a hera,
e humildemente quis também morrer.

Não grita, não se queixa, não murmura,
guarda a mesma aparência hostil e dura
mas sofre o mal de não poder sofrer.

God made the stone rough, he made it strong,
and then determined: -You will be eternal.
Yours will be the bearing of ones who rules,
Not even death will dare to touch you.

And the stone was happy with its destiny.
It was palace, it was temple, it was cavern,
it was statue, it was wall, it was cistern,
It lived without heart, without faith, without purpose.

But it witnessed the death of the prince, the monk, the beast,
The hero, the artist, the flower, the fountain, the ivy,
And with humildity wished also o die.

Does not cry out, does not complain, does not censure,
It preserves its hostile and harsh demeanour
But endures the pain of one who cannot suffer.
